Fundraising & Sponsorship

It is a common misconception that First Responder Groups are kitted out with ambulance, equipment, supplies & uniforms paid for out of public funding. We would like to emphasise that all First Responder Groups are entirely voluntary: including the raising of funds to get on the road, and without the support of grant awarding bodies and the generosity of the local community, none of us would exist. The training courses are provided free of charge by the Ambulance Service, and once a Group goes live, any consumable supplies used are replaced by them, but otherwise every penny of the (not inconsiderable) cost of buying, equipping and runnning our ambulance has had to be raised by ourselves.

We do of course contribute in no small way to the response time target the Ambulance Service is required to achieve.

We are pleased to announce that we now have a fully kitted out car, thanks both to many generous donations from people in our local community, and to grants & sponsorship awarded to us as a result of the tremendous work done by Jean, our fundraiser, in making applications to various grant awarding bodies

"On behalf of all the Waterhouses Community First Responders, Trustees & Volunteers, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported us in any way, and have helped us to get this valuable community asset, literally on the road"

Wilson Young
Chairman WCFRG

A big Thank You to our mysterious benefactor who visited Waterhouses on 3rd July 2008

Recent Events

The most recent fundraising event done on our behalf was the Three Peaks Challenge which was tackled by an intrepid band from the Jervis Arms in Oncote (a good place to eat by the way) who raised over £1000 for us. Thank you everybody who did this climb, and thank you to all those who sponsored them.

If you dont know what an epic undertaking this is, it involves climbing the three highest mountains in the UK within 24 hours ~ read more about it here When they have recovered I will try and get somebody to do me an article & photographs to put here.

Sponsored Cycle Ride

Trustees Vince Cooper (navigating at the back) and Paul Rushton (motive power at the front) accompanied by Clare Cooper (in the middle having a brew) are cycling (on separate bikes) the whole length of that well know tourist route between Waterhouses and Berwick-on-Tweed, a total distance of 325 miles in aid our our funds.

They will be setting off 14th April accompanied for at least the first mile by our ambulance in case of emergency, and hope to arrive in Berwick a week later.

If you would like to sponsor them, call in at Waterhouses Surgery or email clare@waterhouses.net

Update: Saturday 14th April

A group of supporters waved them off, along with the village ambulance driven by Responder Jean Young who escorted them for the first few of their 325 miles.

The intrepid trio hope to complete the ride in one week: in fact they are sufficiently optimistic that they have already booked their return rail tickets to arrive back in Derby at 3 pm next Saturday. They will be met by the ambulance once again just outside Ashbourne for their triumphal arrival back in Waterhouses.

It’s still not too late to sponsor them: you can do so by calling in at the surgery either in Waterhouses on Waterfall Lane, or in Alton on Hurstons Lane where the receptionists have sponsor forms, or by calling Jean Young on 01538 308 027 to make your pledge.

One week and nine hours later, the trio were back in Waterhouses.

Here they are crossing the finishing line outside Waterhouses Surgery, having done a few more miles than the 325 they set out to do because of a diversion caused by a right of way error on an OS map.

They were a little delayed because their train home was ½ hour late getting into Derby, promptly followed by an enforced stop to repair a puncture.

Having proved they are most certainly not 'over the hill', all three are adamant that they will not repeat the experience.

Many thanks to all who all who sponsored them, and to Paul's wife Karen who drove the support vehicle, offering much moral support when the going got tough.

Thanks to our Young Farmers who raised over £1000 for us at a Slave Auction held at The Green Man in Bottomhouse last night. A precise figure when Bill has done all the adding up.

Our sympathy goes to Mr Arthur Coates and family on the death of Hilda, wife of Arthur and mother of Reg, Gwenneth & Joyce, and we express our grateful thanks for the generous donation of £900 made in Hilda's memory. Mr Coates wish is that our Responder vehicle (pictured here as he presents the cheque to fundraiser Jean Young) will carry a piece of equipment in memory of his wife.

We propose putting the money towards the purchase of a ‘Thumper’. More properly called a Lucas Device, this is an amazing piece of medical equipment that performs perfect CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) - a life- saving procedure in which first responders are trained extensively.

The Thumper provides exactly the pressure and rhythm appropriate for the patient whether they’re a 16 stone man or 8 stone woman, and can carry on working (powered by a gas cylinder) at this exhausting task, freeing up a pair of hands for other vital tasks, until further help arrives.
